Regional Demographic Comparisons

This appendix provides a demographic comparison of the Tweed Heads area and three other major urban areas.

Demographic data is derived from the Australian Bureau of Statistics 2001 Census. The areas used for comparison are as follows:

  • Tweed Heads Pt A Statistical Local Area (Tweed Heads Pt A)
  • Brisbane Statistical Division (Brisbane SD), which covers the metropolitan area of Brisbane, Qld.
  • Gold Coast-Tweed Statistical District (Gold Coast-Tweed SDI), which covers both NSW and Queensland portions of Gold Coast.
  • Sydney Statistical Division (Sydney SD), which covers the metropolitan area of Sydney, NSW.
Household Structure
  • The Tweed and Gold Coast areas have relatively high ratios of couple and lone person households due in part to the large number of retirement aged residents.
  • Ratios of traditional families are well below the Sydney and Brisbane metropolitan averages.

Age Distribution
  • Tweed and the Gold Coast Tweed have higher ratios of residents aged 55+ and lower ratios of residents under the age of 55.
  • Tweed has a relatively low ratio of young adults and a much higher ratio of retirement aged residents compared to the Brisbane and Sydney regions.

Occupations
  • The Tweed area has a higher ratio of blue-collar workers compared to the Gold Coast and the metropolitan areas of Sydney and Brisbane.
  • Gold Coast Tweed and Tweed have relatively high proportions of clerical/sales/service occupations.

Dwelling Characteristics
  • Tweed Pt A has a much higher proportion of fully owned homes with the large number of empty nest households.
  • The Brisbane area has a relatively large ratio of homes being purchased and the Gold Coast-Tweed has a relatively high ratio of rented homes.

Dwelling Types
  • Tweed Pt A has a high ratio of semi-detached housing, flats/units and other dwellings (caravans etc.) when compared to the Brisbane statistical division.
  • Sydney and the Gold Coast have higher ratios of flats/units.

Motor Vehicles
  • The average number of cars per household in each area is as follows:
    • Tweed Pt A 1.31 vehicles per household
    • Sydney SD 1.47 vehicles per household
    • Gold Coast-Tweed SDI 1.50 vehicles per household
    • Brisbane SD 1.57 vehicles per household
