Ministerial launch of Tweed Heads master plan by Minister Diane Beamer on 27-Aug-2004

The Hon. Diane Beamer, MP launched the Masterplan for the Tweed Heads Town Centre Precinct at the Southern Cross University located at the heart of the Tweed Heads CBD. The release of the Masterplan completes the Ministerial Taskforce original brief announced in June 2002 and marks the commencement of the implementation of a revitalisation program. The Draft Masterplan and associated documents went on public display from 11 May to 31 May 2004. The purpose of the exhibition was to provide the community and the stakeholders with the opportunity to have an input into the future planning of Tweed Heads Town Centre.

The public display was part of the community consultation strategy adopted by the Taskforce to ensure effective public participation and community input into the planning process. The feedback from the public display was taken into account by the Taskforce prior to making final recommendation in relation to the Masterplan and the revitalisation action plan for Tweed Heads Town Centre. The Minister congratulated the Taskforce members and thanked the co chairs Mr Neville Newell MP and Mr John Griffin and the project Manager Mr Magdy Youssef for their commitment to the revitalisation of Tweed Heads Town Centre over the last 2 years.

The Implementation of the Masterplan will be co-coordinated by a project facilitation group consisting of representatives from Tweed Shire Council, the Department of Planning, the Department of State and Regional Development and the Tweed Economic Development Corporation, to advise key stakeholders, the community, public and private agencies and Tweed Shire Council on the implementation process of the Masterplan.

I am looking forward to returning to Tweed Heads next time to experience the changes the Masterplan would bring to Tweed Heads. Several key challenges must be met to establish a vibrant town centre in Tweed Heads. The area needs a larger and more diverse local resident population; we need to enhance the linkages between its major retail and entertainment facilities, Ms Beamer said

The next phase of the project will see a cooperative effort between the Project Facilitation Team, Tweed Shire Council and the key Stakeholders, with input from the community and a variety of other focus groups who have knowledge, experience and a passionate interest in the future of Tweed Heads Town Centre.

The Project Facilitation Team will continue to work closely with the community during the implementation period of the Masterplan to provide the opportunity for residents, traders and the business community to discuss the proposals and the design concepts for the Town Centre and to provide feedback to Tweed Shire Council and State Government agencies.
