Queensland University of Technology (QUT) Student Projects

38 Third Year Urban and Regional Planning students spent six weeks from February to April 2003 getting to know Tweed Heads through undertaking a comprehensive urban analysis.

Working in ten groups, the students then spent a further eight weeks, from April to June 2003, preparing Urban Design Frameworks for Revitalising Tweed Heads Town Centre. Their design approaches and planning ideas are summarised on the twenty display boards (two boards for each proposal).

The School of Design and Built Environment at QUT gratefully acknowledges the support of the Tweed Heads Taskforce for this project, and particularly the briefings provided by Magdy Youssef, Jo Gardner and Ronnie Hoskisson. Thanks also to Councillor Bronwyn Luff for assisting with the students' initial fieldtrip. Tutorial assistance was provided by planning practitioners Nigel Poulton and Mark Doonar. The project was supervised and coordinated by Dr Daniel O'Hare, Seniour lecturer Urban Design at QUT.

Revitalising Tweed Heads Town Centre

Tweed Heads is at the intersection of two contrasting cultural landscape: it is seen as both the most southerly part of the Gold Coast, and the most northerly part of the NSW Far North Coast. The Gold Coast has an urban image, while the North Coast has a more relaxed and 'natural' image. At a local level, Tweed Heads is one half of the "Twin Towns" of Tweed Heads and Coolangatta. In this project, we have attempted to mobilise potential advantages of the 'halfway; status of Tweed Heads, to provide a sound basis for the revitalisation of the town centre.
